“Moving and Learning” to Better Health: IMIL at June Conference

OHSAI will be hosting a 2.5 day “I am Moving, I am Learning” (IMIL) training as part of the June Leadership Conference to be held June 7-10 at the Dayton Marriott.  We are very excited to have IMIL facilitators from Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio joining us, as well as the very dynamic Brandon Williams of “Choosy Kids” who is one of the developers of the IMIL materials.

I Am Moving, I Am Learning (IMIL) is a proactive approach for addressing childhood obesity in Head Start children. IMIL seeks to increase moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, improve the quality of movement activities intentionally planned and facilitated by adults, and promote healthy food choices every day.

While Head Start agencies who have not yet participated in IMIL training are being given preference in registration, this event is open to all Head Start providers.  In addition, the Office of Head Start has been working to engage the Child Care field in the IMIL initiative, and the Regional Office is encouraging Head Start to engage their Child Care partners.  This event presents an excellent opportunity for local programs to give Head Start staff and Child Care partner staff the opportunity to experience this training together, which includes a time for planning for how to infuse IMIL into program operations.

Ohio’s demographics are rapidly changing and families, teachers and policy makers have become increasingly aware of the need to address the linguistic diversity of the state’s preschool students, many who are experiencing a formal educational experience outside of the home for the first time. This interactive fifteen hour module will provide teachers, administrators and literacy specialists with a foundational understanding of cultural differences and language acquisition as well as the knowledge and tools to help children prepare for transition into kindergarten and elementary school.

This training, facilitated by Debbie Mickey, Early Language and Literacy Specialist, will run the full length of the OHSAI June Leadership and Professional Development Conference.  Click here for more information and registration materials.
