Free Eye Safety Classroom Program for Head Start

Prevent Blindness Ohio and the Boonshoft Museum offer free hands-on interactive, 1 hour programs teaching children, ages PK-6 the importance of eye safety. We will come to Head Start programs and provide interactive lessons that stimulate and educate the youth of Ohio. Go to:

All teachers participating will receive a curriculum called “PLay It Safe With Your Eyes”, a free foam puzzle for the classroom and eye safety brochures to take home.

June Conference Preview: Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors

Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors Training will be offered at the 2012 OHSAI June Leadership and Professional Development Conference

June 5-7, 2012

Presenters: Berta Velilla, Director and Bersy Tudor, Family Support Specialist, Child Focus, Inc. Early Learning; trained Abriendo Puertas facilitators

 This 12 hour session will run the full length of the 2012 OHSAI June Conference. Participants will attend June Conference meals and General Sessions.

 THIS SESSION IS LIMITED TO 15 PARTICIPANTS

 Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors is the nation’s first evidence-based parent leadership training program for Latino parents with children 0-5 years of age. This curriculum, delivered in ten interactive sessions, is based on popular education and draws on the real life experiences and cultural strengths of its participants. Abriendo Puertas was carefully developed and field-tested over a three-year period, evaluated and validated by leading researchers (UC Berkeley) as effective in strengthening parenting behaviors, building critical early childhood knowledge, and developing the leadership and advocacy skills of Latino parents.

This three-day course is designed for family advocates/family development specialists with experience building partnerships with parents in their programs and desire to implement a new approach to actively engage the Latino families in their program. This course is designed to fully prepare the family advocate/family development specialist to return to their programs and build lasting and fruitful relationships using this unique evidence-based comprehensive training program for low income, primarily Spanish-speaking families with children birth to 5 years old.

NHSA Scholarships and Awards – Nominations Due May 31

The National Head Start Association’s Scholarship & Awards Program is open to individual, program and affiliate members of NHSA in good standing. Each scholarship and award provides additional criteria to guide nominations.  Nominees should review all appropriate guidelines and consult NHSA staff with any questions to ensure successful application.
